  Have you ever wanted to learn how watercolorists master the beautiful glowing light in paintings? In watercolor, you have to leave the light, not add it. It only seems mysterious. This course will teach multiple techniques to plan and craft watercolor paintings, to really keep it bright and light. While we’re waiting for the days to get longer, let’s paint a little sunshine and glow.
  

  4 week series only

  Learn how to not let water be the boss of you and create beautiful art!  This is a great class to register with a bestie!

  • Paper: 140lb cold press watercolor paper 6x9 or larger - 100% cotton preferred

  Diane paints in watercolor, pastel, oil and acrylic. She has used Procreate for years to assist drawing from photographs, as well as deciding on color or composition choices.

  This class will guide you through using Procreate to prep your photos for painting. You’ll learn how to combine elements of several photos into one paintable scene, as well as how to eliminate distracting elements, adjust color and value, etc. You will need an iPad with the Procreate app loaded and an Apple Pencil version 1 or 2 depending on iPad model you have. (Note that only the Apple Pencil 1 or Pro are pressure-sensitive.) Procreate is only available on Apple iPads. 

  Requirements:

  iPad and Apple pencil that is compatible with the iPad model you are using. Depending on iPad model it could be version 1, 2, USB-C, or Pro Apple Pencil. Check your model in Settings/General/About. It matters. Note that only the Apple Pencil 1 and Pro are pressure-sensitive and you can use the Apple Pencil 1 with more current iPads.

  Contact me or Apple store if you have questions about compatibility.

  Installed version of Procreate on your iPad. It is in the App Store and costs $12.99 one time payment. I bought mine many years ago when it was $5 and have all current updates and running it on several of my iPads. It used to run on iPad Air – Pro versions. Now I believe it works on all current iPads running iOS 16.3 or later. Check to make sure your iPad works and iOS system is 16.3 or later.

  Procreate exhausts battery power on your iPad quickly. Bring your charging equipment or battery power pack. I have several of these. I carry one in my purse to use in classes when I need my iPad as reference for paintings. If you have an extra power strip (optional), bring it. We may need more outlets than are available on the wall. We can have 2 or 3 people at each table since you only need the space in front of you for your iPad and pencil.

  Have fun learning the steps to creating a 22”x22” silk scarf painted with a gutta resist and dyes.

  Steps will include stretching the silk scarf on a frame, transferring a 20” square line design on the silk with disappearing ink markers and then applying a gutta resist to outline the design and create sections for painting.Once the gutta design is complete, dye in chosen colors is applied to scarf using watercolor brushes.

  To set the dye so that it is permanent, the scarves need to be steamed for approximately 60 to 90 minutes in a steamer created for that purpose. The scarves will then be ironed and returned to the silk painter. (Diane will take the scarves home with her so that they have time to dry completely before steaming and where my steamer lives.)

  All supplies will be provided. Guidance will be given on design strategies and all steps along the way.

  Suggested Brands of oil paint: Sennelier, Rembrandt, Winsor & Newton, Blockx, Williamsburg, Gamblin.  Do not use Winton or any student grade oils because they contain mostly filler with little pigment.

  Oil Paints: Cadmium Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Orange, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Red Medium, Alizarin Crimson, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Thalo Blue, Raw Umber, Thalo Green, large tubes of Titanium White and Ivory Black. Optional: Burnt Sienna, Magenta

  Bristle Brushes All sizes; 1/4" in width up to 2" and 3". One small pointed sable brush (No. 6). Avoid synthetic brushes.

  Painting Medium to thin your paint: 1 Part Linseed Oil + 1 Part Damar Varnish + 1 Part English Distilled Turpentine OR any fast drying medium such as Winsor Newton, Grumbacher, or Gamblin.

  Brush Washer: A can or jar containing mineral spirits also known as paint thinner to clean your brushes

  Palette: The best palette is one that is toned a medium gray. A wooden palette is also very good. Avoid using a white palette.

  Bill Karaffa is a practicing Pittsburgh-based artist who focuses on capturing the portrait in many of his works. His focus is on the technical aspects of portraiture drawing.  His work has been successfully accepted into a variety of international, national and regional art exhibitions. 

  The first part of the workshop will develop the student’s ability to accurately draw the human head/face. The focus for the first day will be on understanding the basics of facial anatomy, proportions of a human head, facial gestures and expressions, rendering facial planes and forms, and how to capture a likeness of a sitter.  The first day will utilize a variety of hand outs, and reference photography.  The instructor will cover the use of photography and some of the pros/cons and adjustments necessary.

  The second day of the workshop will address rendering forms under lighting conditions and will culminate in a 3 to 4 hour long pose session with a live model.

  Sessions may include brief demos by the artist to show the processes being discussed.

  The instructor will provide a variety of hands-on insights and suggestions to participants as they complete the various assignments.

  • How to control the water; too little; too much? Learn the tips.
  • Work Wet and Wet: wet paper and wet brush or dry paper, dry brush?
  • Values: we will do an exercise using one color to create the values from te very lightest to medium to the darkest values. You will experiment with this.
  • Brushes: Let's talk about brushwork: how to use round brushes and flat brushes and explore each brush to make special marks. There are flat brushes, round brushes, detail brushes, rigger brushes, angle brushes, and rake brushes to use with watercolor. All of these depend on how much pressure you apply to your paper, how you hold your brush, etc.
  • Very important are the elements of design and composition to help you create the best in your painting.

  We will also explore the beautiful pallette of spring and talk about how to mix paints and how to best achieve luminous color! Much more will be covered as we go along in the exciting way to paint watercolor.

  An early method of photography, this unique art medium uses sunlight to create a reverse image. In a fun learning environment, students mix the appropriate chemicals, apply them to paper and fabric, and create several pieces of original art. Each student will also have the opportunity to create art on their choice of an apron or a tote bag!

  A great class for beginner to intermediate watercolor artists!
  

  Designed for those of you who have a desire to paint in Watercolor.
  * For those with some drawing ability to those just getting back to painting and for those of you more advanced in painting.

  My classes are designed to inspire and help you have a better understanding of:

  • How to control the water; too little; too much? Learn the tips.
  • Work Wet and Wet: wet paper and wet brush or dry paper, dry brush?
  • Values: we will do an exercise using one color to create the values from te very lightest to medium to the darkest values. You will experiment with this.
  • Brushes: Let's talk about brushwork: how to use round brushes and flat brushes and explore each brush to make special marks. There are flat brushes, round brushes, detail brushes, rigger brushes, angle brushes, and rake brushes to use with watercolor. All of these depend on how much pressure you apply to your paper, how you hold your brush, etc.
  • Very important are the elements of design and composition to help you create the best in your painting.

  We will also explore the beautiful pallette of spring and talk about how to mix paints and how to best achieve luminous color! Much more will be covered as we go along in the exciting way to paint watercolor.

  Class Description:

  Design and composition and the principles of design.
  1- techniques, painting, wet into wet, (wet paper, wet brush), dry into wet (dry paper, wet brush). See how the paint mingles with the water. We’ll do a freeform exercise. No mistakes just plain fun !
  I’ll do a demo and you can paint along
  2- paper, Arches 140 pound, cold press, 100% rag.
  3- pigments, watercolor tube paint or cake or sometime referred to as pan paint.
  4- brushes, how to use your brush to get the most from them. Round, Flat etc. brushes.
  5- WATER: VERY IMPORTANT: How much water, ratio or % to the paint ratio or %. We will learn value studies by the % of water to the pigment (paint).

All sorts of random paper scraps and even egg cartons will become fresh paper for you to use in all of your projects. We will even create some seeded paper, which makes a great gift.
