The local south hills-based art leagues have been invited by South Hills Village to paint a large mural on the hallway walls heading toward the rest rooms on the first floor of the mall. Over several months we have been wrestling with design ideas and finally settled on a "Pittsburgh Personalities" theme. We have a lovely design with a Pittsburgh skyline background and black, white, and gray images of 20+ famous Pittsburghers. We need help painting the background and using a "paint-by-number" approach to painting the personality images (with fun pops of color showing what the personality is famous for, such as a pile of books for Andrew Carnegie). We'll also paint the name of the person and their dates.

Fall Show registration due 9/25 (Friday, September 25, 2026)

The Fall show will be at The Galleria of Mt. Lebanon from October 2-11. You can enter up to four hanging pieces of original work or gallery-ready prints of original work. You can also enter "Artist's Merchandise" (cards, bin art, and 3-D work). You will need to list everything when registering as well as on the inventory sheet (see below). The league will be making the tags. Drop off your work Thursday evening October 1, 7-8 PM. Pick up your work Sunday, October 11 2-3 PM.

We will be open during mall hours. You must sit up to two times to participate in this show (sitting times are 11-3 and 3-7 Monday through Saturday, 11-2 and 2-5 Sundays). You will be called to identify your sitting time(s).

Register for the Fall show by registering online here. This show is open to members only. For links to the full Prospectus and Standards, click here (then scroll down to find show information). Please conform to the Standards including no sawtooth hangers only wired work.

Important! The League will make the display tags for hanging work. In addition to registering, list your hanging pieces and artist's merchandise on the inventory list here, or use the fill-in list here.

McMurray Art League has shown art at PT Library for many years. Library patrons enjoy seeing the art we display. And sometimes they buy art!

Please consider showing your 2-dimensional pieces at the library through 1/20/2027. You may enter up to three 2-dimensional pieces no larger than 24” top to bottom. There is no entry fee, but there is a 15% commission on sold works (10% to the library and 5% to MAL). Field trip to the Carnegie International exhibit (Thursday, October 15, 2026)

Plans are being made for MAL members to have docent-led tour of the Carnegie International Show on Thursday, October 15th. We can carpool from the studio, arriving at CMOA at 11:30 am. We can enjoy lunch at the cafe then spend time visiting the show. A few MAL members are CMOA members and can share free entry tickets with attendees.

Remember the fun art talk about local artist Malcolm Parcell's property he named "Moon Lorn"? Well, we were able to secure a date in the fall when the leaves are turning to paint plein air on the property. We'll also have a fun tour of his house and studio that we learned about in the art talk.

We'll have access to a bathroom and his studio space to paint in should we have inclement weather. Bring your lunch and join us for a fun day 10/17/26 10-2!

There is no charge for access to the property but a donation is appreciated in the jar on the property. The address of Moon Lorn is 357 Parcell Rd, Prosperity, PA 15329.

John Hinderliter, Figure Drawing Series (Wednesday, October 21, 2026)

John teaches figure drawing.

This two-day class will include a live model in the afternoon both days. The important things he wants to teach are about lighting the subject, whether it be a person or still life. Note that the model fee is included in the price.

John came to Pittsburgh in 1975 to attend art school at the Ivy School of Professional Art, a competitor of the Art Institute. Afterwards he made a career as an illustrator for 50 years, working for every advertising agency in Pittsburgh, Penguin Randomhouse, the Wall St. Journal and many others, using both traditional and digital tools. He also taught at La roche College for five years. Most recently he is a fine arts painter, primarily in oils. John has won awards for his advertising, publishing and now fine arts work. The principles of Classical Art will be discussed and demonstrated. Form, Light, Space, Atmosphere, Composition, Color, and Value are all essential concepts. They apply to the landscape, the portrait, the still life, floral, and the figure.

Suggested Brands of oil paint: Sennelier, Rembrandt, Winsor & Newton, Blockx, Williamsburg, Gamblin. Do not use Winton or any student grade oils because they contain mostly filler with little pigment.

Oil Paints: (these are listed in order as they are placed on the palette) Titanium White (large tube), Cadmium Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Orange, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Red Medium, Alizarin Crimson, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Thalo Blue, Raw Umber, Ivory Black (large tube), Thalo Green
